Set the pickup before the movers load

Moving car shipping takes your car to your new home while you fly or drive the other car, timed around the moving truck and your move-in date. Renters, homeowners and people relocating for work call Auto Transport Pros when the car has to go between any two states.

Most household movers don't put cars in the moving van, so the car travels on its own carrier and its own schedule. What matters is lining the two up. Set the pickup a few days before you leave, so the car isn't the last thing holding up your departure, and plan for it to land shortly after you arrive rather than on the exact day.

The car can't double as a moving box. Cargo insurance covers the vehicle, not household goods, and extra weight counts against the trailer's limit. Pack what was in the car with the rest of the house.

Delivery to a new address has its own snags. A new apartment complex may not let a full-size car hauler, about 75 to 80 feet long, through the gate, and a new subdivision may have streets the truck can't turn on. Tell us what the delivery street looks like. If the truck can't reach the door, the drop happens at a nearby lot you agree on.

To set the pickup date against your move, how long car shipping takes gives transit times by distance.

Ship one car, drive the other

Families with two cars often drive one and ship the second. That spares the second driver days on the road and the motels along the way. Car shipping by train, driving or truck sets the cost and time of each side by side, and multiple car shipping covers sending both.

Moves with a hard deadline

A job start date or a lease end doesn't move. Say so at the start of the call, because it changes how early the pickup should be set and whether expedited vehicle shipping is worth it. Moves on PCS orders have their own page: military car shipping.

Moves that ship the car

  • Job relocations with a fixed start date
  • Families moving two cars, one driven and one shipped
  • Renters moving into a new apartment or a gated complex
  • Retirees moving to a new state for good
  • Moves where you fly and the car follows

Dates to have ready for the call

  • The day the movers load and the day you leave
  • Your move-in date at the new address
  • Who can meet the truck if you are not there yet
  • Any gate, HOA or street limits at the new address

Car shipping questions for a move

How much does it cost to ship a car when moving?
The same as any shipment over that distance: the miles, the vehicle, the season and the trailer. Moving season, roughly late spring through summer, keeps trucks busy, so booking early helps most then. The rate for your two addresses comes on the call.
Should the car arrive before or after me?
Shortly after. A car that shows up first needs someone to sign for it and then sits outside an empty home. Aim for delivery a day or two after you arrive, unless someone at the new place can take it.
What if my move date changes?
Call as soon as it does. A pickup that hasn't been put on a truck yet is easy to move. One already on a load takes more shuffling, so earlier notice keeps more options open.
