What door to door actually means

Door to door means the carrier collects and delivers as close to your address as the truck can legally and safely get. It is the standard arrangement on almost every consumer shipment, and it is included rather than charged as an extra.

The limit is physical. A loaded car hauler runs roughly 75 to 80 feet and needs room to stop, turn and lower a ramp without blocking traffic. Narrow residential streets, tight cul-de-sacs, low branches, height-restricted parking and gated communities are the usual reasons a driver cannot reach a front door.

When that happens the driver arranges a meet point nearby, typically a supermarket or retail park with a large lot. This is normal and does not change the price. What matters is agreeing it at booking rather than discovering it when the truck is already on your street.

What to check before booking

• Measure access if you live on a narrow street or behind a gate
• HOA rules sometimes prohibit commercial trailers, so check before booking
