Bikes need different equipment
A motorcycle cannot be secured the way a car is. It needs a wheel chock to hold it upright and soft straps at the correct points on the frame, and it needs a carrier who has done it before. A bike strapped down badly will move in transit, and the damage tends to be to the fork seals or the bodywork.
Most bikes travel in enclosed trailers, either alone or on a rack alongside cars. Open transport is possible for a robust machine, though weather exposure matters more for a motorcycle than for a car with a sealed cabin.
Because a bike occupies less space than a car, the rate is usually lower on the same route. Crating is available for very high-value or vintage machines and adds cost, but it removes handling risk almost entirely.
Most of the checklist in how to prepare a vehicle for shipping applies to motorcycles too, including fuel level and loose accessories.
When this is the right choice
- Relocations where riding the distance is impractical
- Bikes bought at distance or at auction
- Track and show machines that should not accumulate road miles
- Vintage motorcycles that are not roadworthy for long distances
What to check before booking
- Ask specifically whether the carrier uses a chock and soft straps
- Remove or secure loose luggage, screens and mirrors before collection
- Confirm cargo coverage applies to motorcycles, which is not automatic
