Route overview

US-54 is the diagonal here. It runs southwest out of Wichita through Pratt and Liberal, crosses the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles, and meets I-40 at Tucumcari, New Mexico. From there I-40 carries the car past Albuquerque, Gallup, Flagstaff and Kingman to the California line and on toward Los Angeles.

Wind is the weather to watch. US-54 crosses some of the flattest, most open country on the plains, and strong crosswinds or a winter blizzard can stop a tall, loaded carrier until it eases. Past Albuquerque, the high plateau toward Flagstaff can add snow delays from December into March.

Outside the city, check the road and the trees before pickup day. A loaded carrier stands about 13 and a half feet tall and needs firm ground, so a farm lane with low branches, overhead wires or soft gravel usually means meeting the truck at the paved road.

FAQs

Kansas to California: does a rural pickup cost more?
Where the car sits matters as much as the vehicle. A pickup in town near a major highway is usually simpler to schedule and often prices better than one down a county road. A truck or SUV, a car that won’t run, or an enclosed trailer each push the rate higher.
Why does the truck take US-54 instead of an interstate?
From Wichita, US-54 is the straightest line to I-40, much shorter than going south to Oklahoma City first. Some carriers still go the interstate way, especially when wind or snow is forecast on the plains.
Can I ship a car from Los Angeles back to Wichita?
Yes. Los Angeles to Wichita follows the same roads in reverse.
