Route overview

Inland instead of down the coast. From Newark the truck heads west to I-81 and follows it down the Shenandoah Valley into east Tennessee, crosses to Chattanooga, takes I-59 southwest through Birmingham and Mississippi, then joins I-10 near New Orleans for the run across Louisiana into Houston.

The Gulf end carries the risk. From June through November a tropical storm can shut parts of I-10 in Louisiana, and a heavy summer downpour alone can leave Houston underpasses flooded for a few hours. A delivery in those months is best kept a day or two flexible.

Gated apartment complexes rarely leave room for a 75-foot carrier to get through the gate and turn around. If that’s where the car is going, plan on meeting the driver out front or in a lot nearby.

FAQs

New Jersey to Texas: what drives the cost?
Season and size do most of it. A late-summer or fall move can run higher when storm weather is holding trucks near the Gulf, and a lifted truck or a car that doesn’t run costs more to load than a compact.
Why not take I-95 south?
I-81 skips the crawl from Philadelphia to Washington and is usually the quicker line to the Gulf from North Jersey. The truck still reaches Houston from the east on I-10.
Is there a route from Houston to Newark?
Yes. Houston to Newark covers the trip back north, and Houston to New York City is listed separately if the car is headed into the city.
