Western passes

Between Butte and Seattle the road crosses the Continental Divide, Lookout Pass on the Idaho line and Snoqualmie Pass, and any of them can need chains in a winter storm. A January delivery may sit east of a pass until it clears.

Route overview

West on I-90 the whole width of Massachusetts and New York, past Albany, Syracuse and Buffalo and along Lake Erie. Across northern Ohio and Indiana it shares the toll road with I-80; from Chicago, I-94 takes the truck through Milwaukee, the Twin Cities and North Dakota to Billings, where I-90 picks it up again over the Rockies to Seattle.

Lake-effect snow off Lakes Erie and Ontario is the early-winter factor. A heavy band between Syracuse and Erie can close lanes or slow trucks to a crawl, so a November or December pickup should leave some room in the dates.

Take the toll transponder off the windshield before pickup. The car rides on toll roads for much of the trip to Chicago, and a tag left on the glass can be charged along the way.

FAQs

Boston to Seattle: what moves it most?
Season and vehicle move it most. Cross-country trucks fill fastest in summer, an SUV or a pickup takes more deck space than a small car, and enclosed transport sits at the top. Flexible dates make the car easier to place on a westbound load.
Is the trip to San Francisco much different?
It starts the same way out of New England, but Boston to San Francisco stays on I-80 across the West, through Wyoming and over the Sierra, instead of Montana and the Cascades. That run is a separate route page.
Can the car go to Joint Base Lewis-McChord instead?
Yes. JBLM is south of Seattle near Tacoma, at the same end of the trip, and the rate for a base address is worked out when you call. Have the report date handy so the Boston pickup leaves enough time.
